diaper clutch

So I've had another surge of babies in my life...which tends to equal out to a surge of baby projects and gifts. This one is fun, function and easy to make. I've seen some diaper clutches on Pinterest (as well as some for sale on Etsy) and thought that it was something I wanted to give a try. I'm happy with how it turned out. I'm hoping the recipient of this particular clutch will find it pretty and useful.

______________________________________________

Here's what you'll need to make your own:

a 12" x 27" piece of each (for body):
outer fabric
inner fabric
fusible interfacing

6" x 12" piece of inner fabric (for strap)

matching thread
iron/ironing board
a magnetic clasp
______________________________________________

[1] Decide what fabric is going to be your inner and outer. Cut all pieces to sizes needed.

[2] Iron the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of one of your 12x27 pieces of fabric (it doesn't matter which piece you iron it to).

[3] Pin your outer and inner fabric right sides together. In my picture below, the fusible interfacing is on the bottom and the right sides of the fabrics are touching.

IMPORTANT: Leave a 3-4" gap in the fabric for turning and securing your strap. See picture below on where to sew (along the dotted red lines). Make sure you measure to find the middle so your strap ends up centered.

[4] Sew around the perimeter of your clutch (making sure to leave the gap as described above). Turn your fabric right side out and press flat.

[5] Once ironed flat, fold both sides in about 6 inches to create your interior pockets. Pin in place (don't sew yet!)

Following the instructions on the pack, carefully attached your magnetic clasp. Make sure you leave enough room from the edge of your clutch so your sewing machine foot can pass by it when sewing everything together.

[6] Now it's time to make your strap. This is assembled much like the diaper strap from this post:

Iron your 6" x 12" piece of fabric in half.

Unfold what you just ironed, and iron both the top and bottom edge in to meet in the middle.

Fold fabric in half (using the crease you made in the first step) and top stitch to secure.
This will give your strap nice clean edges.

[7] Fold your strap in half and position it into the pocket you left for turning your clutch. Pin in place and top stitch around your entire clutch (this will secure your folded pockets and your strap as well as close your gap left for turning).

ALL DONE!

Oh wait... one final step:
Give your newly made clutch to a busy mama for easy access to diapers, wipes, & clean outfits.

  7. I was just thinking yesterday that I need to make something like this, as my son is still in diapers but doesn't need the whole diaper bag anymore. This is perfect! Your tutorial is great; thanks for sharing!

  8. Awesome Tute! Inspired me to go make some and give away as presents to friends and even donate to those moms who find themselves pregnant and not financially prepared.

  9. I don't have enough fusible interfacing.. Should I use what I have to just go without?

    1. If you have enough for the back section, I'd use it. The flaps that get folded over and stitch down would be fine without it :) Good luck!!

  11. Wonderful tutorial! I just finished the diaper clutch. I used fusible fleece for the interfacing, is that what you used? The interfacing in your photos looks thicker than regular weight interfacing. This turned out so nice, and seems to have plenty of room for more than just a pack of wipes and a couple of diapers :) Cannot wait to make more for the mommies-to-be in my life!

  14. I just made this for a family friend. I hope she loves it. The only thing I have a question on is that I noticed the strap was almost too small for my wrist, is it just for decoration?
